Chang’s works focus on two things, the complexity of sense of belonging, and the documentation of queer intimacy. Chang’s paintings- occasionally sculptures- are fluid figures with multiple interpreted identities. Most of the subjects are imaginative. They tell a uniformed story of the difficulty to tell apart objects with standardised description. Sense of belonging is suggested by the feeling of being home, but being an object or a person without satisfactory definition, where is home?

Queer experience is complex and hard to define, so rather than define it, Chang chooses to document it. Out of all the things that make a person queer, queer sexuality and queer intimacy is the most looked at element, however due to the taboo nature of sex, most of it is mysterious and sometimes it is even portrayed in theatrical and exaggerated ways. Documenting it demystifies queer, and can bridge the gap between the reality and the myths.
