My concept deals with the human figure as an intricate yet complicated being. I was interested in the negative and positive spaces created when two figures folded and intertwined. I found that these arbitrary positions gave a dynamic and shielded presence because I used male models, yet with the female mannequin I achieved a more static presence, and in some cases, together the artwork is balanced.
The reason I chose to display these works as cardboard cutouts, was to allow the figures being represented to have the same awareness as an object or a sculpture in around the space it is exhibited. Keeping the image three dimensional and allowing the object in the image to work with the figure gives it a sense of ‘now’- a performance piece captured and recorded by means of photography. The odd composition and poses allows the work to disappear and reappear in the space. Therefore it disturbs the viewer as its “naked” presence is not so often allowed. The colour scheme chosen is a mechanism to throw off the usual skin palette and helps draw attention to these rather odd representations of the body knot itself.
