1 day of art in Miami
On the 14th of June 2017, I participated in a 1 day of Art event hosted in Miami by (t)here Magazine. The 12 selected artists took a leap of faith to embark on a 24 hour mysterious creative journey. At noon, we each randomly selected a subject that would inspire our 1 day of art. My subject was "Fake News". We could interpret it however we wanted and use any form of art to create it.
My initial idea going went completely wrong and so at midnight, my challenge was to overcome the failure of my first attempt, the time pressure and my discomfort around a controversial subject. Let's just say that I didn't get any sleep!
The final idea was to paint a portrait of Donald Trump, the "King of Fake News" with a Twitter bird on his shoulder, chirping into his ear and write “We’ve got them dancing to our tunes” above his head. The observer needs to decipher the words “Discredit experts”, “Defame renowned news agencies”, “create smoke screens” and “criticize = fake news” just as experts try to decipher him.
“We’ve got them dancing to our tunes” is about the danger of the power to influence the masses in an age where technology and information can be so easily and affordably manipulated to support egocentric and corporate interests, no matter how short sighted they might be and with disregard to the global impact, climate change, havoc, instability, division and mistrust that it creates.
The full story will be published in edition #18 of (t)here magazine in Autumn 2017 and will be handed out at Art Basel Miami 2017 and distributed worldwide to galleries and art collectors.
